400 Blows and 23 Skidoo - Assemblage

Just flicking through the blog archives, I realised that I had never ripped this to a higher quality that mp3, so here it is in 24-bits. Assemblage was a fine megamix of some of the best bits from the dance floor years of Illuminated Records bands 400 Blows and 23 Skidoo, with plenty of samples and loops thrown in for good measure. I'll use this launch an occasional series of re-rips of older blog posts (either to better quality or where I had previously cocked up the analogue to digital mastering), and/or had overlooked ripping them in the first place.

We all bought this didn't we? This classic compilation brings back superb memories of the heady days of my youth. It is a bit worn out and there are many scratches on my copy, but now seems about the right time to attempt a rip. It has come out fine though the eager eared will hear the evidence of wear on a few tracks. John Peel was right, "real life must have some surface noise". As compilations go, this was immense at the time but for me at least, the concept had worn a but thin by Funky Alternatives Three. 

I ripped to 24/96 this time and then down sampled a copy to standard 16/44 for those who value their hard drive space, so you have a choice of resolutions. Enjoy!

23 Skidoo - Ethics

A worthy re-rip, I'm sure you'll agree. 1980's debut 23 Skidoo single never really stood out from the post-punk era. It was only after the release of Last Words and the subsequent Coup single, did I pick this up.

Let's say this is very much a new wave single and not the post-industrial experimentation we know them for. Listening to this now, nearly 30 years on, I love it very much. The b-side, the reggae tinged Another Baby's Face is even better, infact after listening to it again this morning, I'd say it is superb!

The group's tinkering in African and Asian rhythm is well documented in their current reissue series on LTM. Be aware of a dodgy hip-hop period when they reinvented themselves as the embarassingly poor Assassins of Soul.

23 Skidoo - The Gospel Comes to New Guinea / Last Words

If you ever need to hear a stark comparison between the quality of a lossless vinyl rip and that of a mastered CD track, then you this is for you. I ripped this wonderful double A-side from an original Fetish Records 12" single. The pressing was of such a high quality, it only needed a light clean and minimal de-clicking during the mastering phase.

Strangely, the full length 12" version of Last Words has never found its way onto any of the 23 Skidoo reissue compilations, instead both Ronin Records and LTM Records chose to use the promo only 7" version. Here it is in its full 7 and a half minute glory.
