FACUS 2 in 24 Bits

Joy Division - She's Lost Control b/w Atmosphere
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Factory Records (FACUS 2/UK) in 1980 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Totally random Joy Division single? ...maybe! It is always a challenge ripping old favourites as wear and tear becomes a factor to consider and work around. The test on this one is the high frequencies of the tambourine, I may have just gotten away with it as the worn vinyl isn't immediately apparent but it is there for the keener of ear.

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Factory Records (FAC 23) in 1980 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. A thirty-five year old well worn seven inch single is always going to be a challenge to rip in quality high resolution. With due credit to a ProJect Debut Carbon turntable, this is as good as I could get it.

Joy Division - Misplaced
Subtitled Rare and Unreleased Rehearsals 1977-1980. Like previous early Joy Division rehearsal tapes leaked over the past few years, this one will no doubt be followed by the usual rumours, accusations, denials, incrimination and legal threats. The title Misplaced is really a play on words, it is the original title given to early incarnations (albeit with different lyrics) of In A Lonely Place, and there are enough contained herein to add precedence, however it could also refer to a misplaced box of tapes (or were they stolen?), which were then thrown back over the fence at a band members home, after being dubbed and released in a string of bootlegs.
So what is Misplaced all about. Don't expect too much on this double album which hasn't already been leaked by people close to the ex-members of Joy Division, but there are a few bits to attract even the most complete JD collector, and the listener certainly shouldn't expect top studio quality. You should expect formative rehearsal footage recorded on an old tape recorder in drafty old rooms by a band of young musicians still struggling to find their way. You are in for plenty of tape hiss, fluctuating levels and acoustic distortion, muffled vocals, bad notes and wayward chords. For these very reasons, we can appreciate why some band members didn't want Joy Division fans to hear these, but these are perhaps the wrong reasons given that every iconic band in history has a legacy of unheard work, and fans will seek these out at any cost. Bootleggers will always seek to profit at the fans expense - maybe bootlegging the bootlegger is really what the true spirit of rock'n'roll and punk should be about?

Warsaw - An Ideal For Killing

This old low-fi Spanish bootleg is doing the rounds again and has been repressed with a new catelogue number. I'm not too sure of the source, the guy in the shop said it came from the UK, but copies are appearing on eBay in the USA.
Like the original, it comes with an informative info sheet detailing the sources used, and is pressed on black vinyl with a blank label on both sides. Etched in the run-off is "An Ideal For Killing". The vinyl it self is fairly heavy in weight though is likely to have come from recycled sources rather than virgin plastic.
Sound quality is fairly poor. Plenty of bonus clicks, crackle and noise add to the bootleg experience with the added bonus of left hand channel hiss in places - strange really considering most tracks have found there way onto digital formats over the years.

Joy Division / Warsaw - Pictures On My Mind

An exclusive. Courtesy of a blog follower who wishes to remain anonymous, here is Warsaw (or were they Joy Division at the time?) performing previously unheard song, Pictures On My Mind.

It was taken from a tape of early rehearsals by the band probably at TJ Davidsons in Peter St. Manchester during 1977 or 1978.

Edit: Now On Megaupload

Listen

Back in the early days of this blog, I also posted another early demo tape by the band. See here

FAC 251 : The Factory - Opening Night Giveaway CD

Last night saw the opening of Peter Hook's nightclub venture in central Manchester FAC251 : The Factory. The venue is a three floor club in what was Factory Record's final offices and is designed by Hacienda designer Ben Kelly.

Hook was joined onstage by fellow Manc musos and performed a number of Joy Division / New Order / Monaco and Freebass(?) numbers.

Given away on the night was a limited edition multimedia enhanced CD of a new Peter Hook track Tokyo Joe. The disc also features a video of the track made from recent Kevin Cummins shots of the venue.

The track itself is a typical bass driven number much akin to Hook's work with New Order & Monaco.

Warsaw / Joy Division / New Order - Rehearsal Tapes

In January 2009, a Los Angeles internet DJ, played a tape he borrowed from journalist, Jon Savage. The tape contained unheard recordings of the embryonic Joy Divison and New Order.
Hopefully one day, these will be cleaned up and officially released, but for now these mono transfers from the radio will have to do.
1. Inside the Line - 1977 rehearsal recording at TJ Davidsons' rehearsal rooms in Manchester.
2. In A Lonely Place - 1980 rehearsal - the DJ claimed this was a 8th May 1980 rehearsal, others have hinted that it may be the first recording without Ian Curtis.
3. Homage - A 1980 recording and a very different take on the version known from the Western Works tapes.
4. Procession - A 1980 rehearsal with Steve Morris on vocals.
