The Bitterest Pills (They Don't Write Protest Songs No More)

Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding
An irony lost on many a younger generation, and I fear 90% of those who heard it on the radio at the time, the song described by Elvis Costello as the best he'd ever written tackles the contradiction with war bringing prosperity to Britain's shipyard towns, whilst the sons of those very towns where sent to die in the same wars on those very ships. This single was released 30 years ago, the Falklands War was raging at the same time, and now in these modern time we have the same two nations facing off again politically over those tiny little islands.

The Imposter - Pills And Soup
Elvis Costello tackles the UK's right-wing government of the early eighties, the class system in British society and politician's tender relationship with a corrupt press, and it's cheque book journalism. Sound familiar? Why did we have to wait 29 years for Leveson? Any visual similarity between the song writer and Leveson QC Robert Jay is purely coincidental.
