Various Artists - Wild Paarty Sounds Volume One

Ripped from a vinyl album released on Cherry Red Records (BRED 24) licensed from On-U Sound Records in 1981, to high resolution 24-bit flac.  I posted a cd rip of these a few years back, here's the 24/96 vinyl rip I should have posted at the time. 

In theory an On-U Sound compilation (allocated ON-U LP 6) but in reality released on Cherry Red Records, here is another fine early Adrian Sherwood compilation from 1981. Many of the artists listed were never seen or heard of again, but given the heritage, I would guess some would have appeared earlier or later using alternative identities. There was never to be a volume two.

You'll find a fine mix of dubby reggae, twisted post-punk funk and cut-up distortion, all of which carry Sherwood's hefty production signature. The bizarrely named The Chicken Granny sound much like John Lydon or Mark Stewart fronting up a funky 23 Skidoo, Machine Gun Hogg & Co owe much to Medium Medium and A Certain Ratio. Nutty French guy Alan Pellay throws us two splendid works of dubby funk, Manchester's The Mothmen feature original Durutti Column members Tony Bowers and Dave Rowbotham as well as a couple of Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias. American ex-pat Jeb Loy turns turtle, poking fun at his homeland in the Things That Made U.S. I really loved what original capital dub-punksters London Underground did. Their limited back catelogue is well worth tracking down, though their albums and singles are quite rare. Fans of Snatch and New York punk-funk will enjoy the Judy Nylon solo track which closes the compilation.

Here's a splendid compilation of those hard to find 10" On-U Sound singles, mostly mastered from vinyl. I've noticed that the label are in a resurgence at the moment and many of their original master reels are being baked and remastered. Many of these could eventually see the light of day once more.

Topical I suppose, reflecting back on a time when football was just football ...without all the oligarchs, megabucks and gambling apps. An innocent time, perhaps not, my interest in the game has waned over the years and it is disappointing to see they are still fighting on the streets and the terraces. Do they still sing Abide With Me at the cup final?

Judy Nylon And Crucial - Pal Judy

Ripped from a vinyl album which defies all genres, released on On-U Sound Records (ON-U LP 16) in 1982 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. A few of you have pointed out how certain albums have resurfaced as reissues on a revitalised On-U Sound, following their appearance here. I am sure it is coincidental ...or is it? Here is one that hasn't reappeared and due to a very limited initial (and only) pressing, has been regarded as quite rare. Good copies tend to fetch close to £100 - this immaculate one fell into my lap for close to peanuts. If this appears as a reissue in a few months time the theorists may well be proved right.

Judy Nylon had a good strong music pedigree following her move to London in the seventies. Her work with Brian Eno is etched deeply into music history, her work with Crucial  (the usual On-U Sound rhythm section suspects) and Adrian Sherwood has evaded many an ear. This stuff is timeless and genre defying, it tilts one way and then the next across both sides of the platter. From heavy London eighties dark dubs like Live In A Lift to the early eighties New York punk-funk sound on Sleepless Night and The Dice, poetry from early influences like Jamal and his Last Poets on the funky poetic of Trial By Fire. Room Without A View stands up as one of Sherwood's finest productions, as Nylon's sultry voice hovers over Sherwood's smooth dub soundtrack. And then of course there is Judy's wonderful strip club dub of Jailhouse Rock. Superb.

New Age Steppers - The New Age Steppers Vol 1

My final On-U post (for now) is the superb debut album by label collective The New Age Steppers ripped from an original UK pressing in 24 bit quality. Misidentified by many over the years as a reggae record when in reality this is a post-punk record with heavy dub leanings. The line up of musicians is impressive - Mark Stewart, Bruce Smith and John Waddington from The Pop Group, Ari-Up and Viv Albertine of The Slits, Sean Oliver from what would become Rip,Rig And Panic, Steve Beresford and On-U main men, Crucial Tony, Ras Levi, Style Scott and Adrian Sherwood.

The album opens with an alternative cut of Ari's sublime Fade Away, and Mark Stewart vents his anger and anxiety on Crazy Dreams and High Ideals. There are three instrumental experimental works - Radial Drill, State Assembly and Abderhamane's Demise before Ari returns with the punk-dub of Animal Space. The seven minutes of Love Forever start off as the sweetest of pop songs before Sherwood piles on the layers of dub and Ari-Up's voice pitches higher and higher. The closing and quite wonderful Private Armies is heavy dark dub-wave driven by a pounding monotone bassline. Enjoy!

Dusted down from a scratchy 35 year old single, here is the debut On-U Sound release featuring the classic Fade Away by the Ari-Up fronted New Age Steppers. Play this loud! - the bass is just amazing when blasted from proper hi-fi speakers rather than listened through tin-pot inner ear plugs. I've cleaned up the b-side as much as I can because the first work of London Underground is well worth a listen. Hey! Let's push out the boat and rip it in 24-bits!! Stick around for a day or two and the debut On-U Sound album in high resolution will close out this On-U salvo.

London Underground - Current Affairs Session

I am rounding off the early On-U stuff, and almost forgot this one which was promised back at Christmas. The Current Affairs Session was the final release by dub-punks London Underground in 1983. Stand out track Motivation evidences Adrian Sherwood's move from acoustic to electronic percussion. A 7" single edit of the horn-laden Between The Lines should have broke the band commercially but subsequent sales were weak. A live London Underground album was scheduled to follow this but was never released.

The Mothmen - Pay Attention!

I am sure, but open to be corrected, that this was the only On-U Sound release not to feature Adrian Sherwood in any shape or form. The original four piece Mothmen formed from the ashes of the original Durutti Column, who contributed two dub-punk tracks to the A Factory Sample double 7" single pack. The delicate Vini Reilly struggled by on his own (with a little help from Martin Hannett) whereas the remainder became Mothmen. The line-up comprised Tony Bowers, Dave Rowbotham, Chris Joyce and Bob Harding - most of whom were were also involved in C.P. Lee's infamous Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias.

This record defies classification or comparison, and most certainly is unlike anything else on On-U Sound. History isn't clear on how The Mothmen ended up as one of the first releases on Sherwood's label but the Manchester District Music Archive has links to a flyer for the Ardri, and a reggae night in March 1980 featuring Prince Far I, Creation Rebel and Medium Medium (!) where the moths also featured. 

The historical significance of the album and its rarity value are both greater than the sum of what is contained on both sides. To define it, take a twist of pub-rock and layer it on top of post-punk with dub beats and experimental riffs. Pere Ubu meet The Pop Group and Metal Box-era PIL head on, with a good measure of Be Bop Deluxe thrown in for good measure. The twenty minute plus Mothman which covers the entire side two with heavy repetitive rhythms and droning guitars makes me think of Faust or This Heat covering A Certain Ratio's Winter Hill.

There was a line-up change for the second Mothman album which represented a dramatic dive into the mainstream. I will get around to ripping that soon enough.

Here's a rip of the compact disc reissue of Bim Sherman's first UK album proper Across The Red Sea. Fellow lossless blogger Vinyl 301 had ripped his original ON-U Sound vinyl a little while back and the links appear to be still live, though sadly his site seems to have not been updated for almost a year. Sherman's gentle distinctive voice was to feature on many an On-U release over the years up until he sadly passed away in 2000.

Various Artists - Pay It All Back Volume 2

My current focus on the On-U stuff should have completed by now as it was intended only to be a December exercise. I have spent much of my free time over the past five days searching for potential flaws in my system set-up, which seemed to cause overly loud rips and distortion at higher frequencies. After changing cartridges on my deck, re-balancing the tone arm, cleaning or changing all the connectors and then re-installing various software items, I can find nothing which is attributing to the issue. I have a couple of Bim Sherman rips on the back burner which sound very toppy in places. This morning I took time to rip The Mothmen album (coming here soon) and it sounds spot on, well as spot on as a 33 year old very worn slither of vinyl could do. I can only assume that there were pressing issues with some of the mid-eighties On-U vinyl releases which are more noticeable when scrutinised during modern digital processes.

I have been dabbling in 24-bit 96kHz rips again whilst I was looking for issues with my hardware, and can say that I am more than happy with the way PIAB2 came out. So to celebrate the end of 2014 (I personally am glad to see the back of this year), here's my rip in a choice of standard lossless 16bit/44.1kHz or high definition 24bit/96kHz. 

The later PIAB releases were very much hit and miss, but this album is superb without any addition of filler (even though I am no fan of West Ham United - from the enclosed magazine, Mr Sherwood clearly is). The African Head Charge track is an uplifting joy to be hold, and as their first entry into the world of soca it's a dedication to the sport of cricket, which has to be a wonderful thing in my book. The Forehead Brothers are Tackhead ...and Circular Motion is a damn fine piece of Tackhead. The four dub reggae tracks by Lee Scratch Perry, Bim Sherman, Prince Far I and Dub Syndicate are superb, especially Prince Far I watering his smokey garden. Happy New Year!

Dub Syndicate - Tunes From The Missing Channel

The third of the three classic Dub Syndicate albums in my On-U collection. Any record which features a track named Geoffrey Boycott is a must have in my opinion. More superb dubby grooves laden with the plentiful hooks we come to expect from this On-U Sound collective. For years I was intrigued my the unique way Sherwood adds effects to all the instruments on the mixing desk, even the hi-hats and cymbals get touched up and distorted. The wonderful Jolly is a tribute to classic roots, Ravi Shankar (Pt.1) is filled out with a squelchy synth bassline and topped off in sitar. The Show Is Coming comes pounding out of the stereo driven by a powerful rock riff. Must Be Dreaming will be well known to all as it featured on the Pay It All Back compilation.

Doctor Pablo And The Dub Syndicate - North Of The River Thames

Another On-U Sound classic screaming out for a reissue is this 1984 Dub Syndicate blend of covers and originals featuring Doctor Pablo's melodica. Laced with dubby familiarity, these eight tracks are the perfect remedy to the seasonal excesses, who needs a re-run of old Doctor Who's when we can have a spaced out rework of the show's theme. Their cover of The Shadow's Man Of Mystery is a joy to behold. There's a brief Tribute to Bob Marley, then a clever cover of Bobby Scott's A Taste Of Honey works opens side two. Their brief adaptation to We Like It It Hot closes out a fine collection of tunes.

Creation Rebel- Starship Africa

Adrian Sherwood's first production work can be heard on Creation Rebel's fine 1978 album Dub From Creation, but it was this album, recorded the same year with Dennis Bovell and Mark Lusardi, which broke all the ground. After a low key 1980 release on his original 4D Rhythms label, Sherwood re-released it on On-U Sound in 1982.

Each side features one long dub track, each made up of four movements. Side A states it will be the soundtrack for a forthcoming movie (was there ever a film?) and can be best described as unsurpassed psychedelic dub, side B follows where it leaves off then drifts into a vast effect laden space dub. Described on the On-U tribute site as The Grateful Dead meet Tangerine Dream, washed in dub with ambient space and industrial noise - which will no doubt isolate a more mainstream audience, though I am sure many here will love this. Sherwood is given full writing credits on the label as A. Maxwell. Enjoy.

African Head Charge - Drastic Season

Delayed from a few weeks back due to an annoying sound quality issue, here finally is my rip of Drastic Season.  Likely the most experimental of the original albums, Drastic Season tips the scales into psychedelia. It is a sub-continental drift where the band go beyond any preconceptions of structure and rhythm. The listener is cast off into a smokey hazey swamp of  beats and bass, samples and loops, organs and flugelhorns, topped off with the occasional frog croak. Although miles apart musically, sections of Santana's Caravanserai spring to mind as the closest comparison for direction.

London Underground - At Home With The London Underground

The debut London Underground album was released on On-U Sound in 1983. With Doctor Pablo joining adding melodica and piano, the song structures improved and the production tighter with copious dubbed effects.Whereas Holdsworth's voice is clearly out of London, the overall feel and influence is distinctly out of Jamaica, no more so evident than on side one's poignant You Don't Know.

I have the second album ready to be ripped, shortly after that London Underground's short career was over and Pete Holdsworth was eventually to make his living running the Pressure Sounds label. Happy Christmas.

Playgroup - Epic Sound Battles Chapter Two

As promised here is the second Playgroup album in superb lossless quality. Like the first, this was originally planned as an On-U Sound release but then licensed out to Cherry Red. The line-up reduces in size from the first: Ras Levi (Dub Syndicate), Style Scott (Creation Rebel), Bruce Smith (The Pop Group), Steve Beresford (too many to mention), Bonjo I (African Head Charge), and Lol Coxhill all contribute - we all can guess who produces and blends the whole thing together.

The mix of styles and influences here is impressive - from dub to funky soca to urban jazz, this record packs them all in. It's the sound of a multi-cultural eighties London finding it's feet after being suffocated by a thatcherite smog - the wonderful Going Overdrawn sums everything up into one track, I don't recall ever hearing a track mixing Russian violin, steel drums and slap bass. Nobody makes records like this anymore. Enjoy!

Bristol roofer and loose acquaintance of said Mr. Stewart did fairly well on his short-lived journey of self promotion. Two albums of fine musicianship and a few great tunes, but Clail's ragga-style rants do little to convince of his own talent. Beef is an awful single propped up only by Bim Sherman's sweet chorus, the rest sounds just like the late eighties rockier Tackhead with loads of extra samples and loops, wait a mo - it is all Tackhead! Clail's failing is that he sounds like an annoying DJ just ranting over some really good tunes, which is on reflection all that he is.

Singers And Players - War Of Words

On-U On-Demand! There was the nucleus of a an On-U house band which recorded as both Dub Syndicate and Singers And Players, as well as contributing significantly to the New Age Steppers, Creation Rebel, Noah House Of Dread and Deadly Headley releases. Most also played with African Head Charge. The other On-U house band was formed from the former Sugarhill Gang members who worked on the Maffia, Tackhead, Fats Comet, Barmy Army and Strange Parcels projects.

The Singers And Players project added a variety of guest vocal talent such as Bim Sherman, Prince Far I and Neville Beckford (aka Jah Woosh). The result is a pleasing mixture of roots, dub, dancehall and lovers styled reggae. Your resident blogster thinks the late Bim Sherman has one of the finest voices ever to grace a recording studio. Mr Sherwood adds his usual studio magic.

Sounds intriguing doesn't it? Most will likely have overlooked this 1982 gem as a planned On-U Sound release was aborted, and the end product licensed to Cherry Red Records instead .
