The Drugs Don't Work

Ché - Narcotic
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Siren Records (SRNLP 16) in 1989 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Yep... there was an album too and I was likely one of very few who bought it. I blame my On-U labellist fetish and infatuation with the work of Adrian Sherwood for spending  my hard earned coffers on this one back in the late eighties ...and am somewhat surprised it has survived one of my many vinyl culls. Most of side one is US-style mid-eighties funk like Cameo or Sign of the Times era Prince, whereas side two reflects much darker experimental work. There are plenty of signature Sherwood beats throughout, and his work on the soulful Fireflies In Summer and the dub workout Imperfections are highlights. Whilst Narcotic is not a bad album, it is not a great album either, but it is much much better than Strange Things. Sherwood fans will find a few morsels to enjoy - Modern Eon fans will just be totally baffled.

St. Ché - Be My...
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Siren Records (SIREN 612) in 1986 to high resolution 24-bit flac. Modern Eon front man Alex Johnson aka Alix Plain reinvented himself at St. Ché or just plain old Ché depending on which release you have to hand. Nothing too extraordinary about his work as a solo artist, except that when you consider he also roped in messrs. Sherwood, Wimbush, MacDonald and LeBlanc, you may sit up and take notice. Yep, it sounds just like a Tackhead single! I am not sure what's going on during the b-side but it sounds much too arty-farty for my level of intellect.
