Beasts In Boxes

Luxuria - Beat Box
Ripped from a compact disc album released on Beggars Banquet Records (BEGA 106 CD) in 1990 to high quality lossless flac audio.
Rounding off this week's brief flirtation with all things Devoto, here is Luxuria's second and final album, Beast Box with a bonus of two 12" singles from the large penguinflight archive which I am slowly but surely ripping my way through. Noko was to discover chart success with electronic dance act Apollo 440, whilst Devoto, save for a brief cameo in the Twenty Four Hour Party People movie, seemed to retire from music until Magazine triumphantly reformed and performed in 2009. Track 4 seems remarkably apt listening right now for friends across the ocean.

Luxuria International

Luxuria - The International, Manchester, 4th March 1988
Ripped from a master audience cassette recording, made in 1988 to high quality lossless flac audio. I mentioned in the previous post that I had seen Luxuria in London during their only tour during 1988. From the same tour comes this recording of the Manchester date from a legendary taper, writer and Doctor Who fan who goes by the name of Starboy, whom I also believe may well follow these pages. Expect a few Magazine covers and one from Bob Dylan thrown in for good measure. In Starboy's own words....

"Don't cheer! You don't know if we're any good yet!" Thus did Howard Devoto greet us for the only Luxuria tour. They were, of course, excellent, despite one girl shouting 'Do your own material' when he announced 'She's Your Lover Now' (one of my personal favourite Dylan songs).

Now, were they really any good?  Well, you can make up your own mind....

The Luxuria Gap

Luxuria - Unanswerable Lust
Ripped from a compact disc album released on Beggars Banquet Records (BEGA 90CD) in 1988 to high quality lossless flac audio. Along with Wire's Ahead, Redneck by Luxuria sits up there in my personal rankings as one of the best singles of the late eighties, both tracks possibly marking the end of the genre which was the original and genuine post-punk. I recall seeing Luxuria play the Town and Country Club in Kentish Town during 1988 and noted that Barry Adamson was bassist for the evening. Adamson was also credited on the liner notes for songwriting on this album, so I would assume Noko took up bass responsibilities on the studio. Great album! Enjoy.
