Hai! 2

Cabaret Voltaire - Hai!
Re-ripped from a vinyl album released on Rough Trade Records (ROUGHUS 24) in 1982 to high quality lossless flac audio. A few months back Damijan sent over his rip of the Cabs live album Hai! Due to a few connection issues he was never happy with the final results, so here today I can present a totally new rip so please dump your original and help yourself to this. As a bonus a rip from the crackly Gut Level flexi has been through in too.

A1 Walls Of Kyoto
A2 3 Days Monk
A3 Yashar (Version)
B1 Over And Over
B2 Diskono
B3 Taxi Music (Version)

Silent Commands

Cabaret Voltaire - Silent Command
Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Rough Trade Records (RT 035) in 1979 to high quality lossless flac audio.

A1 Silent Command
B1 Extract From Soundtrack For "Chance Versus Causality"

Cabaret Voltaire - Eddie's Out b/w Walls Of Jericho
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Rough Trade Records (RT 096) in 1981 to high quality lossless flac audio.

A1 Eddie's Out
B1 Walls Of Jericho

Here are two excellent early Cabaret Voltaire singles courtesy of blog follower Damijan. A re-rip of his Hai! live album is an imminent accompaniment.

Do The Mussolini Headkick

Cabaret Voltaire - Extended Play
Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Rough Trade Records (RT 003) in 1978 to high resolution 24-bit flac. My rip of the Cabs debut was going to feature a few months ago when I posted Nag Nag Nag, however my copy is basically shot to pieces so a quality rip proved impossible. With thanks to Steve I can now conclude my run of Cabs work with their very first. Enjoy!

A1 Talkover
A2 Here She Comes Now
B1 Do The Mussolini-Headkick
B2 The Set Up

Two Mantras

Cabaret Voltaire - Three Mantras
Ripped from a 12" vinyl EP released on Rough Trade Records (RT 038) in 1980 to high resolution 24-bit flac. Steve has kindly donated a rip of his Three Mantras for all to enjoy. Whereas the Western Mantra was quite accessible by early Cabs standards, the b-side Eastern Mantra revolves around loops of a tape recording made in a Jerusalem market place. That's all from the Cabs ...for now.

A1 Western Mantra
B1 Eastern Mantra

Hai!

Cabaret Voltaire - Hai!
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Rough Trade Records (ROUGHUS 24) in 1982 to high quality lossless flac audio, with bonus P.A. hum.
Courtesy of blog follower Damijan here is the Cabs live in Tokyo during March 1982 in their pre-Crackdown heydays. I only saw them live for the first time a few years later and am disappointed that I never saw them during this era. This pretty much live in your living room as the buzz from the p.a. is evident especially during the quiet spots. There is also a little flutter for a few seconds as somebody at the gig (or perhaps even Damijan) had a few loose cables to contend with. Enjoy!

Drunk On Petrol

Cabaret Voltaire - Drinking Gasoline
Re-ripped from a double 12" vinyl package released on Some Bizzare/Virgin Records (CVM 1) in 1985 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. I'd likely agree with anybody who suggests that this is the Cab's last great release. As requested a few weeks ago, a re-rip in 24 bits.
Drinking Gasoline is four eight minute slabs of pure high energy released as a 12" 45rpm double pack back in 1985. I remember much confusion over titles back when it was released as it appeared the tracks were mislabeled according to the gatefold sleeve.(My copy is a first week purchase and so, has no correction sticker)
Looking back, I'm pretty sure the tracks were put in the wrong order on the sleeve as the etching on the run offs shows that Big Funk should have been side A, Kino on side C and so on. Anyway, it doesn't spoil your enjoyment of this fine electronic hard funk as only the Cabs could do, so I've left the running order as per the pressing rather than the label ....or Discogs.

A1 Big Funk
B1 Ghost Talk
C1 Kino
D1 Sleepwalking

They Want You

Cabaret Voltaire - I Want You
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Some Bizzare/Virgin Records (CVS 5-12) in 1985 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. The stand out from the Covenant album in it's full 8 minute splendour. The flip side Drink Your Poison was unreleased and C.O.M.A. is a cut'n'paste medley (what ..Cabs do a medley?) of the album.

A1 I Want You
B1 Drink Your Poison
B2 C.O.M.A.

FAC 82 in 24 Bits

Cabaret Voltaire - Yashar
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Factory Records (FAC 82) in 1983 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Blog follower Adam has stepped up to the plate with this fine high res rip of the Cabs classic Yashar. What a stroke of genius getting John Robie to layer his over dubs and re-production wizardry all over the original track from the 2X45 long player.

A1 Yashar
B1 Yashar

Lords Prayers

Cabaret Voltaire - The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Some Bizzare/Virgin Records (CV 3) in 1985 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Micro-Phonies and The Crackdown were tough acts to follow and I suggest that The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord couldn't live up to its predecessors. Its not a poor album by any standard, its just to these ears the ideas were beginning to run thin and the production always seemed very flat and narrow sounding, lacking definition and space with many dub effects just thrown in for the hell of it. I am sure many will have a different opinion, but then again you are reading the words of a man who thinks New Order struggled to make a decent album after Low Life.

A1 L21ST
A2 I Want You
A3 Hells Home
A4 Kickback
A5 The Arm Of The Lord
B1 Warm
B2 Golden Halos
B3 Motion Rotation
B4 Whip Blow
B5 The Web

Do Right

Cabaret Voltaire - Micro-Phonies
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Some Bizzare/Virgin Records (CV 2) in 1984 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Was it really thirty-two years ago when we we first got Micro-Phonies? I know I prefer The Crackdown but any album containing Sensoria (a differing version to the single), it's alter-ego Do Right, James Brown, Spies In The Wires and Blue Heat has to be worth every penny. More flimsy Virgin vinyl but with the recording levels cranked up a bit and a new cartridge (thanks folks) Micro-Phonies will come booming out those speakers with surprising good clarity. Enjoy.

A1 Do Right
A2 The Operative
A3 Digital Rasta
A4 Spies In The Wires
A5 Theme From Earthshaker
B1 James Brown
B2 Slammer
B3 Blue Heat
B4 Sensoria

Horses With No Names

Acid Horse - No Name, No Slogan
Ripped from a compact disc single released on Wax Trax! Records (WAX 081CD) in 1989 to high quality lossless flac audio. Okay, so who do we have here...? Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire), Chris Connelly (Fini Tribe), Will Rieflin (The Blackouts & Revolting Cocks), Richard H. Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire), Al Jourgensen (Ministry) and Paul Barker (Ministry). Pretty impressive line-up I'd say. The insert credits say Alien Dog Star, Biff, Harold Sandoz, Gallopin and Scorpiosaddlebutt!! All yours folks.

1 No Name, No Slogan
2 No Name, No Slogan (Remixed)

The Roots Of All Evil

Richard H. Kirk - Black Jesus Voice
Originally released as a vinyl album on Rough Trade Records (ROUGH 99) in 1986. Reproduced here from high quality digital sources in lossless flac audio. Its a Cabs records really isn't it? Funky in places, Richard H. Kirk shows us how to make a Cabds record without Mal, plenty of samples and a synth bass-line take the place of Mal, but all in all Kirk convinces the mind into hearing Cabaret Voltaire. Smart stuff!

A1 Streetgang (It Really Hurts)
A2 Hipnotic
A3 Boom Shala
B1 Black Jesus Voice
B2 Martyrs Of Palestine
B3 This Is The H-Bomb Sound
B4 Short Wave

Masters At Work

Cabaret Voltaire - The Crackdown w/Doublevision EP
Ripped from a vinyl album with bonus four track EP released on Some Bizzare/Virgin Records (CV 1/CDV 1) in 1983 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. I should have ripped this many moons back but the multiple format reissue boxsets made me defer. Now seems a good time to visit likely their finest hour - naming a particular album as an artist's best is purely subjective, but I would comfortably state the albums which followed were just not as important.
The Crackdown did represent a shift in direction as The Cabs left Rough Trade for a licensed deal with Some Bizzare. Pounding sequenced electronica replaced multi-layered distortion and experimentation, Mal's voice needed less treatment, as did his bass guitar. This was a stripped back almost danceable soundtrack to post-industrialism, where Cabaret Voltaire left all their peers in their wake. Ask me to name a favourite track and it would likely be Animation where the Cabs find a groove, but the title track and the morphed-disco of Just Fascination will find favour with many as well. My copy came with the limited 12" EP labelled as four tracks from the Doublevision video.

A1 24-24
A2 In The Shadows
A3 Talking Time
A4 Animation
B1 Over And Over
B2 Just Fascination
B3 Why Kill Time (When You Can Kill Yourself)
B4 Haiti
B5 Crackdown
C1 Diskono
C2 Doublevision
D1 Moscow
D2 Badge Of Evil

Cooled Down

Stephen Mallinder - Temperature Drop
Re:Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Fetish Records (FE 12) in 1981 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Just for completeness, here's a re-rip of the Temperature Drop 12" complete with the full version of Cool Down for those who need it. (btw ...I do not have the Johnny Cash cover before anybody thinks to ask). Oh ....and spot the deliberate mistake?

A1 Temperature Drop 5:06
B1 Cool Down

....When You Can Kill Yourself?

Richard H. Kirk - Time High Fiction
Released as a double vinyl album on Doublevision Records (DVR 2) in 1983. Ripped here from a 1994 compact disc reissue to high quality lossless flac audio. Most of the tracks on Time High Fiction date back to 1979 Western Works sessions rather than the later beat driven works. Consequently this album is more a compilation of experiments over time rather than works of a specific period in RHK's recordings. This is remarkably accessible music in places and there is much to like, however those with a nervous disposition should best stay clear of the two Dead Relatives pieces.

1-1 The Greedy Eye
1-2 Shaking Down The Tower Of Babel
1-3 Force Of Habit
1-4 Day Of Waiting
1-5 Black Honeymoon
1-6 Nocturnal Children
1-7 Wiretrap
1-8 The Power Of Autosuggestion
2-1 Dead Relatives Part One
2-2 Dead Relatives Part Two

Why Kill Time......

Stephen Mallinder - Pow Wow (Plus)
Originally released as a vinyl album on Fetish Records (FM 2010) in 1982. Ripped here from a 1992 compact disc reissue to high quality lossless flac audio. I posted the 12" of Temperature Drop some while back and had been considering expanding to Pow Wow Plus at the time. A blog follower sent in a request the other evening and so here you are. Both the Mal and RHK releases around this period sound just like Cabs albums, except that you can hear who uses the more dub influences in his work, and by comparison which one leans to more experimental electronics. Guess what's up next?

1 Temperature Drop
2 The Devil In Me
3 0-58
4 Pow-Wow
5 Three Piece Swing
6 Cool Down
7 1-37
8 In Smoke
9 1-59
10 Length Of Time
11 Going Out
12 Del Sol

Gets In Your Face

Cabaret Voltaire - 2X45
Originally released as a Double 12" 45rpm vinyl album on Rough Trade Records (ROUGH 42) in 1982. Ripped here from a 1990 compact disc reissue to high quality flac audio. Sit ten Cabs fans down in a circle and ask each of them to name their favourite Cabaret Voltaire album, and I'll bet you get ten differing answers. Me? I sit on the fence holding copies of this and The Crackdown. The two albums encompass the development of their sound perfectly, from the post-industrial dub of 2X45 to the structured beat electronica of The Crackdown. The crossroads really lies at the end of Side B on this, as the three tracks on the first records are Chris Watson's last, he left to wander the English countryside clutching his tape recorder, whilst Mal & Richard worked tirelessly manipulating their sounds for a bigger audience on a major label.

A1 Breathe Deep
A2 Yashar
B1 Protection
C1 War Of Nerves (T.E.S.)
C2 Wait And Shuffle
D1 Get Out Of My Face

Nagg'idy Nag Nag Nag

Cabaret Voltaire - Nag Nag Nag
Ripped from a well worn 7" vinyl single released on Rough Trade Records (RT 018) in 1979 to high resolution 24-bit flac. An experiment in getting the best out of a very well used, in fact worn out 7" single. Nag Nag Nag came out very well, however Is That Me...? did not. Snap, crackle ...and pop!

A1 Nag Nag Nag 4:36
B1 Is That Me (Finding Someone At The Door Again?)

Twenty Four Track Loop

Nort - Cool On The Loop
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Edsel Records (CALC 45) in 1988 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Some pounding hard-edged indie-funk from former Cabaret Voltaire & Hula drummer Nort, in three mixes. The side one tracks are actually segued together but are spit here according to the times on the label. Enjoy!

A1 Cool On The Loop
A2 Cooler On The Loop
B1 Cool On The Loop (Muscle Mix)

Hoodoo Voodoos

Peter Hope and Richard H. Kirk - Hoodoo Talk
Originally released on Native Records (NTVCD 28) in 1987, ripped here from an overly limited reissue cd to high quality lossless flac. Sheffield trivia time. Peter Hope was not the original vocalist in ClockDVA splinter group The Box. Cabs front man Stephen Mallinder assumed vocals on early Box gigs. I have this on an original vinyl too but it is just a tad too crackly for a decent high res rip.
