Not Normal... Just Normil
Blog favourites Normil Hawaiians return this weekend with the long awaited issue of their lost final album Return Of The Ranters, which you can order direct here. They also play London's Lexington on Saturday 24th October 2015 ....see here. ESWA unfortunately cannot be there, so hopefully some of you can make it.
To celebrate, here are the first few Normil singles re-posted for all those who missed (or carelessly overlooked) first time around.
Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Dining Out (TUX 13) in 1980 to high quality lossless FLAC audio packed with high resolution product scans and bonus crackly vinyl rumble, because we know you like that sort of thing.

Normil Hawaiians - What's Going On?
As promised a while back, here is a lossless rip of the rare final Hawaiian vinyl. The difficult second album was made more awkward on the listener as Guy Smith moved into a more psychedelic, free-form improvised sound. Martin still has the post-punk leanings of earlier singles but everything else is very different, at times challenging as the music meanders off into a smokey confused haze.
Stand outs, Ignorance Is Strength and The Big Lie are lost and suffocated by the huge improvs of Market Place and Free Tibet. Those with open minds will love this, but many others will be confused and turned off by the random and meaningless shifts in tempo and direction. A third album was recorded in 1986 but never released.

More Wealth Than Money
Normil Hawaiians - More Wealth Than Money
This lossless post of one of the most popular ESWA features has been on the back burner for quite some time. There was much love around for the Normil Hawaiians debut album when I featured More Wealth Than Money as a scratchy mp3 rip a good few years ago. Lead Hawaiian Guy Smith popped up said hello, paid tribute to the late Hawaiian Jim Lusted who had sadly passed away, and hinted that he was looking at getting the album reissued. That is still to happen and I for one hope that we all buy a copy when it does finally appear. I was recently chatting with a former employee of Illuminated Records who suggested that most copies ended up as landfill back in the eighties which is a real shame.
If you have a spare £60 - £130 you can pick up a copy of this album through the usual resellers. To label this double vinyl LP a classic may seem a little far-fetched to many, but to me, this is a long lost, long deleted gem. The 2014 Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide doesn't even value the album which should hold down prices for original copies, but all it would take is a resurgence in rare post-punk vinyl for values to rocket. Collectors of rare psyche music have been driving the second-hand market prices, maybe if they were eventually to turn their attentions to the eighties period, then the worth of this product and similar releases (like the Bam Caruso catelogue) can only rocket.
Normil Hawaiians were a South East London post-punk outfit revolving around guitarist/singer Guy Smith who used varying ensembles of musicians with each release. After a couple of low key singles (all previously featured here), the band's debut was a huge double slab of overblown progressive post punk (there's a new tag label for your ipod). Think Joy Division meets Pink Floyd meets Magazine meets Amon Düül playing Wire. Krautrock influences are all over the place as well, A New Standard is much like the motorik beats of Neu's Hero, Left Alone With Her Pipe owes as much to Can or Amon Düül II as it does early dubbed PIL. This double vinyl treasure is, to these ears, two saucers filled with secrets. Every home should have a copy of this, so here's your chance (but for only two weeks).......

Still Obedient
Normil Hawaiians - Still Obedient
The Normils dip into Pere Ubu territory with a complex and arty follow-up which was released in 1981 on the fledgling Illuminated Records label. The unusual mix of latin percussion instruments and distorted guitars is really rather good, and the brilliant flip Should You Forget? is a huge pointer to where the band's direction was heading, which was to evolve further on the subsequent albums.Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Illuminated Records (ILL 7) in 1981 to high quality lossless FLAC audio, with scans of course.

Beat It!
Normil Hawaiians - The Beat Goes On
Here's a quality rip of the classic debut by ESWA faves and progressive punks, Normil Hawaiians. The Beat Goes On was released on the excellent Dining Out label which was essentially a fore runner to Illuminated Records. This is essential stuff and by all accounts a very rare release. I will hold back from reposting the Normil's first two albums as I understand that there will now be compact disc reisssues of the first two LPs and the missing third album in the coming months, and we should all start saving our pennies to buy them.Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Dining Out (TUX 13) in 1980 to high quality lossless FLAC audio packed with high resolution product scans and bonus crackly vinyl rumble, because we know you like that sort of thing.

Normil Hawaiians - Gala Failed
Quite clearly one of the finest forgotten bands from the era and I'm pleased to see lead Normil Hawaiian, Guy Smith add to the comments on earlier posts. It would be superb if Guy does manage to find a reissue outlet for the band's two albums, and hopefully the lost third one. It was also sad to hear of the death of co-Hawaiian Jim Lusted earlier this year. Jim shared vocals & guitar with Guy and wrote a good few of the band's songs, including the superb Party Party and the stand out funk-prog (!!) of Obedience which feature on this 12" EP.For Hawaiian virgins, there is no easy definition of the band's sound. There are elements of kraut-rock, psyche-rock, post-punk and prog, think of a blend of Pere Ubu, Wire, Can, P.I.L.& early Floyd, and you'd be heading in the right direction. It is arty rock without the posing. According to the band's website, the tracks were laid down at Orpington's Mousehole Studios in November 1980.
