Information Society
I was first introduced to Minneapolis act Information Society by my brother who was a huge hip-hop fan in the mid-eighties. It was the track Running Away which grabbed my attention with its European sythnpop beats and melancholic lyrics and moody vocal style. The single was a big hit in the New York clubs in 1986 on the Tommy Boy label, some time after it had been originally self-released in 1983. I featured a crackly rip of the 12" Tommy Boy pressing back in the early pages of ESWA.
Other singles followed including the wonderful Nimoy-sampled What's On Your Mind, which was eventually released in the UK following a deal with London Records. This LP was never officially released in the UK. I do struggle to sing its praises - there are one or three goodies (mostly the singles) but the rest varies between mediocrity and poor. There is even an Erasuresque-Abba cover to really make you cringe. Information Society dumped their musical credibility in the search of pop stardom.What is sad is that they tried to portray themselves as wacky and zany, if only they had to stuck to what they were good at.
