Sound Stuff

Second Layer - Flesh As Property
Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Fresh Records (FRESH 5) in 1980, acquired with shareholder funding in 2016, to high resolution 24-bit flac. This is the second pressing I think as the originals came with a white sleeve ...but who cares??

Re:Rubbed

Second Layer - World Of Rubber
Originally released on Cherry Red Records (BRED 14) in 1981, ripped here from a compact disc reissue in high quality lossless flac audio. Re:posted for those who may have missed my original musing. Here's what I wrote a few years back....
Those who are unfamiliar with Adrian Borland's prolific discography fear not, World Of Rubber is not an album for fetish lovers, though many will understand the double meaning, few will know what Second Layer were about, the title seems apt. It is clear that Borland and Green wanted to exercise their dark experimental and minimalist chops, and boy, didn't they do it well. Although released in 1981, most tracks have a late seventies heritage, so these boys were dabbling in areas where very few others had tread. Its timing puts World Of Rubber somewhere between Unknown Pleasures and Red Mecca. Work out where that is and you will know exactly what to expect, then you will find much to like in this record. Again, I have used the CD for this post, so the extra unreleased track Skylon is included.

State Of Emergency

Second Layer - State Of Emergency
Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Tortch Records (TOR 006) in 1980 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. A tap on the window, a tap on the phone....
A kind blog follower who wishes to remain anonymous recently sent in a donation with just one instruction to use part of the funds to acquire, rip and share a copy of this single for all. I only have the Second Layer album as a cd, so after a brief trawl of my usual sources seeking a decent copy ...here it is! I would hazard a guess many of my followers no longer have access to their old vinyl favourites, or have a turntable, so now resort to digital copies. It's my pleasure to track these things down and try to get the highest quality reproductions of these great old singles.
For those who don't know, Second Layer (or 2nd Layer as they are depicted on the sleeve) were a side project from Adrian Borland and Graham Bailey from The Sound. Expect now to hear some excellent post-punk electronica of the highest order. Enjoy!
