Great Concept, Poor Delivery

Black Britain - Obvious
It seemed to take an eternity for Black Britain to get an album out. These NME darlings found much praise on the live circuit and their debut single, Ain't No Rockin' (In A Police State) struck a chord against the political situation in the UK at the time where a right-wing government had been in power too long, and the abusive excesses of that power had generated corruption, greed and arrogance.
Aided and abetted by Paul Weller and Mick Talbot, a deal was scored with Virgin who fended them off onto their 10 Records subsidiary. Like many other potential talents before them, the mistake of getting in three different producers would ruin the album. Also commercial pressures to produce a hit on the back on the resurgence of Brit-funk could only have contributed to their failure. The decision to cover Funky Nassau only seemed to murder the band's hard gained reputation, if not actually suicidal when it was put out as a single. What resulted was a greatly weakened album product, at times bland soul-dance rather than the hard-hitting edgy political funk which was promised.

Ripped from a vinyl album released on 10 Records (DIX 30) in 1987 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio.
