Love them or hate them, the new breed of American indie bands promoted and distributed by 4AD really did kick start the US indie scene which had been relying on British talent for new sounds and directions since post-punk. Previously, the best bands were snapped up by the majors with everybody else left to snack on the leftovers. Transatlantic deals saw The Pixies, Throwing Muses and The Breeders (technically spawned from the other two) find new markets which just a few years previous would have been difficult to break let alone get distribution. I know that 4AD had to do some licensing deals with the majors, but the label were surely the major protagonists in breaking these bands. Of the big three, it was The Breeders who appealed more to me personally as their charm and wit shone through better than the twisted dark scourge of The Pixies or the jerky innocent inconsistency of Throwing Muses - my opinions of course - many will feel otherwise I am sure. Cannonball was the hit, right? Thanks to Steve for these excellent rips.
