Frank Chickens - We Are Frank Chickens
Now here's some leftovers from the Peel legacy. The Frank Chickens recorded six sessions for the great man's BBC radio show between 1983-1989 and shot to indie-pop stardom off the back of the first session and a subsequent Tube appearance. The driving force behind this novelty Jap-Synth-Pop were David Toop and Steve Beresford, both distinguished composers, studio engineers and producers, with the public face being London based ex-jap-pats Kazuko Hohki and Kazumi Taguchi.
We Are... is the debut Frank Chickens album and can best be described as silly dance-pop-rap similar to what the Tom Tom Club were doing but with Japanese accents. At times amusing, but mostly cringe worthy this is not a great record, but it was a huge step in Anglo-Japanese relationships for the post-
It Ain't Half Hot Mum generation.
Many years ago, I posted a rip of their first single, a cover of Fujiyama Mama, which strangely didn't appear on this album. If there is enough demand, I'll dig it out and post a re-rip. The classic b-side We Are Ninja does feature.
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Kaz Records (KAZ LP2) in 1984 to high quality lossless flac audio.
