Lost Masters

Popular Voice - Temptation
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Backs Records (12 NCH 005) in 1983 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. I though I'd have a go at re-ripping this great old single from back in the heady days when ESWA first went lossless. It has to be some of the worst mastering to vinyl you'd possibly ever hear. Last time I tried to tweak the wave forms to improve it, but here it is ripped unadulterated straight from the record. Great tune all the same! A lost pop gem - here's part of what I wrote back then in case you missed out.

There was a time (though very briefly) when Norwich (yes...Norwich!) was the hip hub of British independent music. Local store Backs Records formed a label as an outlet for local talent with Popular Voice and The Farmers Boys being amongst the first bands to release product. The other key Norwich Band of the period, The Higsons had their own Waap label and would later sign with Upright.
All three acts were pivotal in the creation of the Norwich sound - a sort of quirky D.I.Y pop-dance. Norwich even had it's own punk band, in an earlier post I covered the booze & football-fuelled Serious Drinking. Channel 4 TV ran a short documentary about the Norwich scene on their Switch TV show in 1983.
Popular Voice only released two singles, the debut Home For The Summer is included in the archive for nostalgic completion reasons. Temptation was their moment. Though a serious oversight by the label was the lack of a 7" version as at over 5 mins, the 12" would have struggled to get airplay. Backs were also guilty of a really poor mastering and pressing quality however Temptation is a great pop song with an uplifting melody and a great hook - there is also some cheeky chic-like guitar riffing for a disco feel.

Popular Voice - Home For The Summer

Staying in Norwich. I featured Popular Voice's superb pop single Temptation in an earlier post, and here is their excellent debut 7". It's much more in the style of indie funksters Maximum Joy and A Certain Ratio with a superb slap bass line, and is backed with a subtle, clever and jazzy flip. I've always had an admiration for the Backs Records catelogue (though I have so little of it) and the wealth of talent which came from it.

Home For The Summer : ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Backs Records (NCH 002) in 1982 to lossless FLAC audio, packaged with high res scans.

Backs were also guilty of a really poor mastering and pressing quality - This post is ripped from clean vinyl on a brand new turntable but I've had to manipulate the wav files a bit to improve your listening experience. It is a great pop song with an uplifting melody and a great hook - there is also some cheeky chic-like guitar riffing for a disco feel. As I said earlier a long lost pop gem.

Various Artists - Touchdown

An unique & interesting compilation of indie & unsigned acts on Polygram offshoot Fontana, all with a unique twist on indie-pop/dance music. The Higsons and Maximum Joy tracks are standards and most of you will know them, The Farmers Boys and Dislocation Dance both went onto better things and Popular Voice were eventually to release one great single (Temptation - coming soon!). Most of the rest disappeared without a trace, apart from Vital Excursions percussionist Nellie Hooper who went on to make a mint.

Highlight without a doubt is the Norwich supergroup (!) The Popular Higson Boys, whose one-off funk and fun-filled cover of I Can't Get Next To You which is included as a single-sided 12" single with the album.
