Contemplating Genius

Bill Nelson - Getting The Holy Ghost Across
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Portrait Records (PRT 26602) in 1986 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Time to revisit one of my favourite solo artists and one of the world's greatest living Yorkshire men. Bill is also one of the worlds most prolific recording artists and still records and performs (rarely) these days. His career encompasses nearly all possible genres from prog rock to punk and new wave, from art rock to pub rock, from synthpop to ambient experiments and atmospheric soundtracks, there is something for everybody. For me, though I do also have a few earlier Be Bop Deluxe albums and the Red Noise LP, it's the run of early-mid eighties synthpop albums. Contemplation just a great song to grow old to! Mick Karn doesn't feature on the sleeve credits so I assume not the record, but the influence from his work with Bill on Chimera is readily apparent.

Bill Nelson - Acceleration
Here is a  really catchy electropop single from Bill Nelson, the b-side is really interesting too with multiple cut-ups and samples over a low fidelity techno beat. The sticker says "U.S. Remix" and this is a reworked version of the original album track by John Luongo. I upped this a few years ago and thought a lossless re-rip would offer a good companion to Banal.

Ripped from a well worn and crackly 7" vinyl single released in 1984 on Cocteau Records (COQ 15) to high quality lossless flac audio.

Bill Nelson - Banal
Bill Nelson, the man who spent ten years in bands between solo careers, and still one of the world's most prolific artistes in his own right. I do have some Be Bop Deluxe and Red Noise (maybe later) but for now it's the post-glam beat of Banal. Fantastic!

Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Mercury Records (WILL 12) in 1981 to high quality lossless flac audio.

Bill Nelson - Chimera
To a point no other artist has been as prolific as Bill Nelson, yet his commercial success has been very limited. From his first solo album in 1971, through six years of the fantastic Be-Bop Deluxe to the poetic meanderings of his solo revival on his own Cocteau label. He is the godfather of art-rock, always keeping ahead of the crowd by dabbling in the obscure mix of progressive rock and punk rock with Be-Bop Deluxe and then new wave band Red Noise.

Chimera is his synth-pop album, but with rather less emphasis on the pop when compared to luminaries such as Paul Haig and Thomas Dolby. Art-rock influences remain strong throughout with contributions and synths from members of YMO. The late ex-Japan bass genius Mick Karn adds his un-fretted melodies to one track, the complex Glow World. For catchy synth-pop, Nelson gets it spot on with the single Acceleration and a perfect chorus hook which just sticks in your head. Then there is the majestic Another Day, Another Ray Of Hope which closes the album. New Order-style emulators pump out Temptation-style rhythms drenched in washes of synth string melodies and bowed guitar, then Bill's lyrics really make you sit up and listen. I was just seventeen when I first heard this album, but I probably wasn't old enough to truly appreciate it. This is synth-pop for grown ups.
