Fate

Nyam Nyam - Fate/Hate
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Factory Benelux Records (FBN 28) in 1984 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. A single which has appeared here a few times but I think the last time was in 2011, but never in high res. Much overlooked doom laden synthpop from Hull's splendid Nyam Nyam. I'll stick my neck out on this and state that Peter Hook's production, fiddling and mixing on the a-side (and the subsequent dub mix) do little for the track, and if anything just make it far too long & busy. This should be very evident when you compare it with the original album version which has also slipped into the archive ....for comparison purposes only of course. The whole story of the track is told here.

Nyam Nyam - The Architect

The final re-post and lossless re-rip from this lot is The Architect.
Most of this five track 12" EP was recorded shortly after the Hope Of Heaven album and again released on Situation Two, but this time in a lovely 23 Envelope sleeve.

The EP takes a similar vein to the album and takes things a little further as the title track owes more to Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen than the post-punk sound and arty influences on Hope Of Heaven. Nick Cave was to make a living bashing out this kind of stuff ten years later. The Last Place was a much earlier recording, cut at Cargo Studios in Rochdale in 1982.
The sound is a million miles away from the proto-electro-disco of the Peter Hook produced Factory Records release, but the two stand-out tracks The Last Place (Hope Of Heaven) and the rework of And To Hold make this a worthwhile download and listen.

Nyam Nyam - Hope Of Heaven

An album which I believe deserves a re-rip on the new turntable and a lossless FLAC post. So here it is. This album has never seen a CD reissue, which surprises me very much - maybe one of our quality reissue labels should pick it ip and add on the various other singles and demos which the band recorded. You reading this, James?

Nyam Nyam's claim to fame was the Factory Benelux released 12" Fate/Hate produced by New Order bassist Peter Hook. Hooky claimed to have found a copy of the band's self-released first single lying around Strawberry Studios and loved it.
Factory Records did not continue their interest and the band moved on to 4AD/Beggars Banquet off-shoot label Situation 2 and released Hope of Heaven later in 1984. The album, whilst not a classic deserves it's place in history, and has been very much over-looked. There are some very strong tracks including a un-Hooked recording of Fate and powerful & highly personal post-punk, art rock tracks such as This is the Place, Hope of Heaven and The Illuminated Ones.

Singer/Songwriter Paul Trynka's gravelly vocals are much more suited to the bands true dark sound than Hook's electro-pop workings on the Factory release. I believe that the band's original version (on this album) is much much better.
The band followed up the album with a 5 track EP, The Architect in 1985 (losslss rip coming soon). After that, Nyam Nyam ceased to trouble us. Lead singer Paul Trynka has since re-emerged as editor of classy music mag, Mojo.
