The Palace Of Light - Beginning Here & Travelling Outward

Re.Ripped from a vinyl album released on Bam Caruso Records (KIRI 058) in 1987 to high resolution 24-bit lossless flac audio. With all this jangley feltness, it feels appropriate to re-rip the only album by The Palace Of Light. If you ignored this last time, then shame on you, if you missed it then you are in for a treat, if you grabbed it a few years back, then here is an upgrade.

Bam-Caruso Records were very active in releasing music by new bands alongside a plethora of psyche reissues, and gave a hand to Manchester University band, The Palace Of Light by lending them in-house producer, Brian Marshall and a string section for their only album.

The resulting Beginning Here and Travelling Outward is rather splendid. The Palace Of Light were responsible for some fine eighties semi-acoustic indie-pop but had little recognition except among their peers and a few local fans. The Smiths fronted by The Felt's Lawrence would be the best description of their sound but there are subtle twists of contemporary psyche (hence the Bam-Caruso interest). The gentle City Of Gold and the jangle-pop Safer were singles but neither gained any press recognition or praise. Folkier numbers such as Return To You and If She Should Blame Him were to feature on Bam-Caruso samplers, but for me, the Scott Walker-like Bitter Seal stand outs out as the album's highlight. The Palace were eventually to change their name to Mabel Joy and released just one more, very difficult to find compact disc album on Bam-Caruso in the early nineties. Enjoy.

Del Amitri - Del Amitri

Originally released as a vinyl album on Chrysalis Records (CHR 1499) in 1985. Ripped here from a 1990 compact disc issue to lossless flac audio. Once Scottish indie-pop darlings who played The Hacienda supporting The Fall and then headlining The Wake in 1984, Del Amitri went all pompous mainstream rock in the late eighties and found huge chart success in sickening defiance of their more independent roots. Those with good enough memories will remember the jangling charm of the debut Sense Sickness (I am sure I had a copy somewhere ....now lost it seems) and the cracking debut album on Chrysalis with a short string of accompanying singles. For those too young to remember, expect charmingly gorgeous indie-pop with sprinkles of folk much like early James.

A quick catch up on a request from a while back, here's the second album from Anglo-Belgian jazz-popsters Allez Allez. Perhaps Martyn Ware was an unusual choice for studio production duties, however the result is fine, glossy and commercial. Though deprived of any major mainstream success, Flesh And Blood should have been a worthy hit.

It was pleasing to recently read that three quarters of the original line-up (minus Dave Allen unfortunately) of Shriekback are touring this year with three major dates in the UK (I last saw them live at Surrey University in 1985 with A Popular History Of Signs). I have always felt they lost their direction after Oil And Gold in 1985 when Barry Andrews steered them away from their experimental funk roots. Some of these singles have appeared on ESWA before, but these are upgrades and there are a few additions. Enjoy.

No time like the present to update my Lean On Me! post from last year with some more Redskins from my own collection and from penguinflight's boxes. I cannot recall the number of times I saw the Redskins onstage between 1983-1985, but it was substantial - most of the time with the then young troubadour Billy Bragg. Politics can be an idealistic game, and the NME journo X-Moore (real name Chris Moore) toured his Redskins skinhead soul-brand around the UK preaching to the massed converted studentia. Yep, I was once one. They were quickly snapped up by Decca Records and made a few small dents into the hit parade eventually infiltrating the mainstream, though I doubt many ever got the message.

Allegedly this single was pulled by the label following the death of Princess Diana, though totally unconnected, the world lost a Princess and Denim lost the opportunity for a Summer smash hit.

Ripped from a vinyl album released on Boys Own Recordings (828349.1) to high quality lossless flac audio. Lawrence is back as Denim! He reinvents himself, then cranks it up and camps it up in this post-Bolan, Glitter & Quatro glam rock'n'roll cameo for nineties kids. This is great stuff which just goes against all the parochial work of his past. I never saw them but Denim must have been great live. If anybody has lossless copies of the next two albums, please get in touch as they are proving very difficult to source. Enjoy!

Intastella - Drifter

Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Planet 3 Records (GXY TR 2001) in 1993 to high resolution 24-bit lossless flac audio. I have covered the manc-band Laugh in depth before and touched on that they became Intastella when local starlet Stella Grundy took on vocal duties. After a brief one album career (in the shadow of the mighty World Of Twist) on MCA Records, they then found their pop chops with this fine and breezy pop song in two mixes. Shaun Ryder and 808 State were then roped in for a psyche-sludge rendering of Gungadin for the b-side.

Terry Edwards - The Cure Ator EP

Ripped from a self distributed 12" white label (STIM 006) to high quality lossless flac audio. Former Higson and Serious Drinker Terry Edwards shares his love of Robert Smith and a good cover version on this rare vinyl EP. His pseudo-dub version of Killing An Arab is a gem, Edwards also manages to show the back-combed one how to play Inbetween Days without robbing any New Order riffs. Thanks to Steve for the rip.
