In January 2009, a Los Angeles internet DJ, played a tape he borrowed from journalist, Jon Savage. The tape contained unheard recordings of the embryonic Joy Divison and New Order.
Hopefully one day, these will be cleaned up and officially released, but for now these mono transfers from the radio will have to do.
1. Inside the Line - 1977 rehearsal recording at TJ Davidsons' rehearsal rooms in Manchester.
2. In A Lonely Place - 1980 rehearsal - the DJ claimed this was a 8th May 1980 rehearsal, others have hinted that it may be the first recording without Ian Curtis.
3. Homage - A 1980 recording and a very different take on the version known from the Western Works tapes.
4. Procession - A 1980 rehearsal with Steve Morris on vocals.
and as for 8th May as a date.... 5/8/80? Not that it's inconceivable to *be* the 8th... the band weren't doing much after High Hall except getting ready for the US trip...
ReplyDeleteI often wonder what the third JD studio album would have been like...

They hadn't even completed the second album when Ian died. I often wonder what their fifth one would have been like? Probably better than the "difficult" fourth one.
DeleteI had downloaded the podcast previously, but this is much better. Great to hear Steve Morris singing as well, thanks!
ReplyDeleteIALP is almost certainly post-Curtis...is the voice at the start Steve Morris, berating Hooky?
ReplyDeleteBTW, the DJ is one Michael Stock, visit http://www.parttimepunks.com to hear his podcasts...not bad, at least when he can keep his facts straight.
ReplyDeleteNow I know why Steve was not picked to sing.
ReplyDeleteThe "In A Lonely Place" take is definitely an early New Order rehearsal.
ReplyDeletePeter - can you please get the un-released rehearsal tapes you have out there for those who want to hear? Great that you are touring with the old material. Fantastic on that.
