Ram Ram Kino were the alter ego of Factory Records' Crispy Ambulance with a very different sound to CA's psychedelic post-punk meanderings. Crispy Ambulance began to lose direction following their difficult Sexus single on Factory Benelux, so the four original members just renamed themselves, after German porno cinema, as Ram Ram Kino and adapted to a new sound.
Very much in the quirky pop-funk vein, the RRK sound was not quite as expected. Whether they expected to find a new audience is unknown, but Alan Hempsall's unique vocal style is immediately recognisable over the horn laden, slap bass driven funk with congas! By releasing this, their only output, on Psychic TV's Temple Records, RRK did little to enhance their commercial chops.

In 1984, Hempsall and the band circulated demo tapes of their repertoire around Manchester, including Stockport pirate radio station KFM. Thanks to blog follower and Manchester music writer Craigie*, we can post them here.

Thanks a lot to all involved for the Ram Ram Kino demo tape. I love the Crispys and even travelled from Denmark for their reunion concert in 1999 at The Band On The Wall... but Ram Ram Kino is - as so precisely described above - something altogether different. Not quite my cup of tea... but the demo is very interesting!
ReplyDeleteThe Haciends gig (with Paychic TV - Nov.5 1984 or 85) was excellent, with a washing machine drum as percussion. The 12"EP (which I have) just remends me of Duran Duran.

ReplyDeletePTV Hacienda gig is about to be released on CD for the first time ever - I was there - was barely a crowd - we drove from Sheffield - didn't give us the sensation that the Hacienda was happening at that point. Such a shame these links are LONG gone. Odds on me hearing that demo are ZERO.
