ReplyDeleteSet The Tone seem to have been erased from history. They appeared on the first edition of The Tube before they were signed and were on the front cover of NME before they had ever released a record. There were lots of accusations of hype at the time and a lot of people wanted to see them fail.
I knew Chris and Kenny really well. They had played a few gigs in Glasgow under the name Call Me Irresponsible With A Chemistry Set. When Kenny came back from New York with Simple Minds in late 1981, he was really fired up by a lot of the hip hop he'd heard there and wanted to do something similar.
The album and the singles Rap Your Love and Dance Sucker were good, but not as immediate as the demo versions. They also had trouble with the live shows: the Tube appearance was mimed and looked fantastic, but the first live shows they played after the release of the album were a bit sterile. They sacked their bass player Bobby Patterson and brough in an American session man and in many ways that was the beginning of the end.
Chris, as far as I'm aware, still lives in New York and never did anything musical again.
watched this band live at the Hacienda circa 1983 they were promoting the album at the time. Sadly only about 20 people in the that night but what a night..... the girl in the group through out a skipping rope and encouraged us to skip along the music LOL! despite the lack of punters ... one of the best gigs i ever attended !
